TV hypnotist ‘raped me after trying to put me in a trance’
A young woman told a court yesterday how a TV psychic tried to put her in a hypnotic trance before he sexually assaulted her.
The 22-year-old said she was first abused by Martin Smith when she was just seven.
She told a jury that as she grew up he would regularly try to hypnotise her before carrying out more serious assaults.
Smith’s trial comes seven months after his partner Lianne Smith suffocated their two young children in a hotel in Spain.
Just days earlier he had been extradited from Spain to the UK to answer the abuse charges.
Rebecca, five, and Daniel, 11 months, were found lifeless on the bed in the Hotel Miramar in Lloret de Mar.
Miss Smith is due to go before a judge accused of their murders.
The couple are not married but share the same surname.
Martin Smith was first arrested over the abuse claims after the alleged victim – who cannot be named for legal reasons – went to police in 2007.
Giving evidence from behind a screen at Manchester Crown Court, she said: ‘He thought he knew how to hypnotise me.
‘He would sit me down and say, “I’m going to count down from ten to one and by the time I get to one you’re going to feel like you’re asleep”.
‘He seemed to think it worked. I would count down. I was so used to doing what he said I would just do what he told me.’
The alleged victim said: ‘It didn’t work, I was still completely awake. I knew what he said. Then he would rape me.’
The 45-year-old psychic, who has appeared on Living TV’s Most Haunted show, was questioned by officers over the allegations but later left the UK for Spain with his partner.
He has denied three counts of rape, three counts of attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault and one count of indecency with a child.
Yesterday a jury of seven women and five men heard the psychic, originally from North Shields, had ‘systematically abused’ the girl from 1995 to 2004.
The alleged victim said she was frightened of Smith. He would make her carry out sexual acts and she was so confused she did not know what was happening, she said.
She added that as the abuse escalated, Smith would attempt to rape her but would become ‘frustrated’.
The court heard the defendant would on occasion be violent, hitting her with a slipper.
The woman said she would never say anything about the attacks because often she was ‘meant to be hypnotised’.
She told the jury: ‘It was horrible. You know it’s wrong.’
The court heard she did not tell anyone about the sexual abuse, which ended in 2004, until 2007 when she became ‘hysterical’ and told a doctor, before eventually reporting her claims to the police.
Lianne Smith, 43, a former social services manager, has appeared in court in Spain where she admitted asphyxiating the two children with a plastic bag.
She is being held in prison in Girona and will face two counts of murder at a later date.
Earlier this year a judge deemed her mentally fit to stand trial and ruled out admitting her to a psychiatric unit.
Her partner’s trial continues.
